I’ve started a Meetup.com group for us at http://www.meetup.com/wordpresswinnipeg/ ! It’s probably horribly broken right now in some way but I’m sure it’ll get better.

The bill for Meetup.com comes to $43.20 every 6 months. If you’d like to chip in, find us a sponsor, or just buy me a beer towards that, that’d be awesome. Also, if you’re in the donating mood, why not donate to the WordPress Foundation or contribute to WordPress?

Thanks for starting up the meetup.com group.

I’d like to chip in for the payment. I’ll pay a third of whatever it is, probably, since you were not sure what the amount will be.

I started a donation thingamajig for members on the meetup.com site with a suggested starting point of $1. Hopefully that’ll keep everything transparent — members can see how much money has come in and hopefully see where it’s going — and on the up and up. Brent did buy me a beer at the last meetup but I think I wound up making that transaction indirectly transparent anyway.

Same bat-time. Same bat-pub. Come out to The King’s Head on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7pm to geek out with Winnipeg’s finest WordPress nerds. See you there?

I’m going to get our meetup group set up on Meetup.com. If anyone knows of a sponsor willing to cover the cost I’d love to talk to them. They might like to know that WordPress is used by more than a few people. Have them contact me at ian at iandanielstewart dot com.

    Training Opportunity

I’m doing an intermediate-level presentation on WP on Aug 23 at New Media Manitoba. It’s free, but you have to register.

I’ll walk you through building a WP-powered portfolio, showing you along the way how to think and solve problems like a WP developer.

    • Dan Bernardic 6:58 pm on August 17, 2011 Permalink | Reply

That’s really cool. I’m gonna register for sure.

I did a WP presentation at the Winnipeg Code Camp, also for building a WP-based portfolio 🙂

Dang! You’d have to pick a busy week when I can’t make it out, wouldn’t you? Can we get an overview at the next #wpwpg meetup?

      • Matt Wiebe 7:07 pm on August 17, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I hacked into your calendar just to check. 😛

Sure, I can talk through it a bit with people who want some info. I’ll release the slides and theme after the presentation for folks to look at.

Just registered for it. I’ve been wanting to learn how to do that for awhile and just haven’t had the time to figure it out so serendipitous timing.

For anyone who didn’t notice my comment, let’s drink beer and talk WordPress on Wednesday (Aug 3) at 7pm at the King’s Head.

There is a >50% chance that I will be coming to this.

    • David 12:56 am on August 3, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I will be 1/2 hour late. Even though I’ll be in the building.

      • Ian Stewart 6:25 pm on August 3, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Even though I know why you’re going to be late though still in the building I’m enjoying imagining science-fiction and kung fu related scenarios for why this would be.

In a shocking move, we’re posting about the next potential meetup more than a day before. Why potential you ask? Because it’s summer in Winnipeg. If there’s enough interest, we’ll say it’s on. So, who’s up for meeting at the King’s Head on Aug 3 @ 7pm?

    • Holly 2:16 pm on July 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

If I’m in town I’ll definitely come, but I might be at the lake next week, work permitting.

    • Kirk 2:36 pm on July 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’ll be in Winnipeg visiting from Montreal – I’m in! (I miss the King’s Head…)

    • Steve-O 7:16 pm on July 27, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I haven’t been to one of these before, but I would be able to attend.

    • David 3:08 pm on July 28, 2011 Permalink | Reply

You have shocked me into action. I’ll be there.

    • Brent Toderash 6:41 pm on July 28, 2011 Permalink | Reply

So we’re on then? Not sure you need that much of a quorum to drink beer and talk WordPress. ;^) I’ve started making a list of questions and problems to bring along… a weird query that almost works, bilingual sites, and, um, whatever else I can come up with by then.

I’d be curious to hear about others’ local dev set-ups, migrating between hosting accounts, working with Subversion and Trac…

OK, sounds like there’s enough sad people who aren’t at cottages or something. Let’s drink beer and talk WordPress on Wednesday (Aug 3) at 7pm at the King’s Head.

Come to the King’s Head on Wednesday, drown your cabinlessness sorrows in WordPress and beer, leave a better person all around.

  • Ian Stewart 11:45 am on July 6, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Today is the first Wednesday of the month and that means … we might have a WordPress meetup this Wednesday. Summer snuck this Wednesday up on us and we haven’t had time to do any preparation for today. Including the very basic, our usual promotion. What do you say Winnipeg? Let me know if you’re up for a meetup tonight. If I can confirm 5 or more of us here in the comments — our inaugural number — we’ll get together at the King’s Head and talk about some of the new features in WordPress 3.2!

As I already told Ian, I’m up at Clear Lake, and will sadly miss this one.

I would love if it was rescheduled to next Wednesday. I’ve got two other things on tonight.

    • Ian Stewart 5:55 pm on July 6, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I think what we’ll do is shoot for the first Wednesday in August, possibly even September. Apparently there’s this thing called “summer” going on. I hear it happens at a place called “outside”. I’m not too sure about it but it sounds kinda neat.

    • Holly Clarke 6:20 pm on July 6, 2011 Permalink | Reply

It’s true. I’ve heard of it too. Don’t blink or you’ll miss it.

Next Wednesday, June 1, will be our next WordPress meetup at the King’s Head Pub. We’ll start at 7:00 pm and finish up somewhere around 9:00 if history repeats itself. Since there won’t be any set presentations you can come and go as you please. That said, somewhere during that time period I’ll be dragging out the laptop and demoing WordPress 3.2’s new admin refresh and brand new default theme, Twenty Eleven.

    See you there!

It’s that time again! As mentioned previously, we’re holding a WordPress meetup the first Wednesday of every month. That means we have a meetup next week, Wednesday, May 4 at 7:00, this time at the King’s Head Pub. Bring your WordPress questions and, this time, your favorite WordPress thing. That thing could be a theme, a plugin, a tutorial, site, line of code — you name it. Hopefully, we’ll all come away with something we can use. 🙂

    See you there!

Great to see some friends again and meet new folks at last night’s meetup! See you on June 1st, everyone!

    • Holly Clarke 7:07 pm on May 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I missed it! Doh! I’ll put the next one on my calendar. Does anyone want to share their “things” on here?

    • Brent Toderash 8:15 pm on May 6, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Great to see everyone. I always come away having picked up something new and interesting to apply.

But now I’m wondering… when is the first Winnipeg WordCamp?

  • Ian Stewart 12:40 pm on April 8, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Last night’s meetup (our third) was pretty cool. The Yellow Dog Tavern was a perfect location for us and there was some good WordPress knowledge-sharing happening. To help keep that momentum going we’re going to start holding the Winnipeg WordPress Meetup on the first Wednesday of every month. That would make the next meeting May 4, and then June 1, and so on. Sound good? Keeping a regular date will make it easier for us all to plan around — and remember. 🙂

If you have some other ideas on making our meetups even better, we’d love to hear them!

I’ve been thinking that we could advertise through Secret Handshake on meetup.com, I believe Leanne would be glad to have us advertise our meetup through her group, and it might reach more people who are interested in meeting up about WordPress.

      • Ian Stewart 2:47 pm on April 8, 2011 Permalink | Reply

        That’s an excellent idea.

        • Dan Bernardic 3:07 pm on April 8, 2011 Permalink

Thanks very much, I’m glad you like it.

I am actually looking to start a weekly co-working meetup for WordPress website builders, as well as aspiring ones. Basically a number of people in the same room working on making their WordPress-based sites, and sharing knowledge and ideas. I’m mainly looking for a venue still.

Sorry I missed it. Though I have been working with WordPress about six years now, I’ve still got loads of WordPress questions and will enjoy the next meet up that I can attend!
